***Claire Castillon’s work has been translated into twenty languages*** ***My Mother Never Dies was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt***
Once again, Claire Castillon’s talent soars. —Marie-Claire
Claire Castillon doesn’t challenge taboos in these short, sharp tales of mothers and daughters. She shreds them.
—The New York Times on My Mother Never Dies
Once again, Castillon shreds taboos, this time focusing her thirty-eight short texts on couples. Most of the chapters are named, with the exception of a few, after a woman. In “Madeleine,” an exceedingly optimistic and hopeful woman is made the fool when her sister steals her boyfriend; in “Sharla,” a husband asks his wife to depict their love-making to him in graphic detail and she just doesn’t get it; Raphaëlle cuts off all her hair to please her lover of one night; frigid Dorothée’s husband is ever hopeful that one day his wife will at last let him make love to her; Ondine’s mother still treats her like a baby after seventeen years, and shows her off naked in front of the dinner guests; a mother intercepts her nanny’s mail in order to ruin the young woman’s love affair.
Each portrait here reveals as if through a magnifying glass an exponentially grown, very human, flaw. And it is this flaw that brings a character down, often without their knowledge. Claire Castillon’s work takes no prisoners. In thirty-eight relationships no one is spared, to the reader’s horror, amusement, and guilty pleasure.
