Her friends and cousins all call her “Red Alert,” but when she joins them at a small mountain ski station to escape her city life and dire financial situation, no one could have predicted the chaos she would create. It all began when Red Alert heard about a mysterious hermit, purportedly a mystic, living near her cousins’ chalet. Just five years ago, the papers were full of him. He had been locked in a closet by his parents and when found, at twenty-four, he was unable to walk and barely able to talk. The authorities had pulled him out of his confinement after discovering his parents dead: His father had drowned himself after cutting off his mother’s head and placing it on a pitchfork outside the cabin. The young man had stayed in the mountains, not once setting foot outside his door. The villagers, thinking him some sort of sage, went to him for answers to their problems. Although Red is not sure what she wants to ask him, she knows she has questions.
Red sneaks out of the chalet and makes the trek to the mountain man’s cabin, expecting to discover a pale, hunchbacked, and socially inept recluse. Instead she finds Paul. He is tall and handsome and has a talent for putting everyone at ease and always knowing just the right thing to say. He is quite normal—except for his fear, stemming from his childhood confinement, of leaving his cabin. Red falls in love on that first visit and soon senses that Paul may share her feelings. Again and again she climbs the mountain to be with him, until one day she decides that loving him is not enough. What he needs is to break free from his fear of the world. With no real plan Red enlists the help of the villagers but the consequences of her good intentions will weigh on Red’s conscience forever.
