Description
In her latest novel, A Marital Affair, best-selling author Éliette Abécassis shows how, at a decisive point, one partner realizes how little she knows her husband, and then describes, with a vivid and accurate eye, the battle that moves them toward divorce.
Agathe, a screenwriter, and her husband, Jerôme, the CEO of a start-up, have been married for eight years and have two children. She believes their marriage is a beautiful love story. Then she finds that her husband has been going on dating websites—and that he is having an affair.
As Agathe contemplates divorce she tries to figure out why the love story has come to an end. She confronts Jerôme unsuccessfully and then begins to spy on him. In her desperate search to understand what went wrong, she goes online and starts virtual communication with him, forging his lover’s identity. Jerôme’s previously unseen character becomes clear: He cannot commit, and his deep need to appear right causes him to persuade his friends and family—even his young children—that Agathe is a fool, the one in the wrong.
The situation worsens. Agathe spirals downward into an emotional breakdown as Jerôme becomes violent. As the situation gets even worse, Agathe finds the strength to disengage from her husband and is finally able to move on with her life.
