During the tenth century, pilgrims started traveling the Way of St. James to reach the apostle’s legendary remains in the Cathedral de Compostela in Galicia (Spain). Although the rigorous journey originated as a form of religious penance, the pilgrimage’s breathtaking views of France and Spain also drew numerous travelers in search of personal awakening and spiritual discovery. Today, the Way of St. James is a popular site of historical interest and remains both an inspiration and an adventure for religious and secular travelers alike. With vivid photographs and reflective text, this book is a visual pilgrimage in itself.
On the Road to Saint James of Compostela, with text edited and collected by Luc Adrian, is divided into 12 months, each of which describes an important stop or monument on the road to Compostela. The reader first travels the French route, visiting Polignac, the limestone plateaus of the Causses, the Pyrénées, Reims, Vezelay—and then travels into Spain. Each day on the route is memorialized with a photograph by Yvon Böelle, and each image of the magnificent landscape is paired with the words of Ovid, Baudelaire, Rainer Maria Rilke, Martin Buber, Saint-Exupéry, the Talmud. . . . Those who have taken the journey are reminded of their experience, and those who have yet to go are intrigued by thoughts of making the journey. The book allows all—the pilgrim, the hiker, the adventurer, and the tourist—to crisscross Europe, living the legend, being inspired to discover a wider and deeper world within themselves.
