In 15 ferocious short stories, Luc Lang seizes on and conjugates the brutality of the contemporary world in all its facets. A married couple, a family, business colleagues, lovers—no one is spared in these bitter tales. Cruels, 13 is a depiction of the present we live in, rendered through the lens of everyday cruelty.

Luc Lang is the prize-winning author of Voyage sur la ligne d’horizon (Prix Freustié, Gallimard, 1988), Liverpool marée haute (Prix du Livre de Picardie, Gallimard, 1991), Furies (Gallimard, 1995), Mille six cents ventres (Prix Goncourt des Lycéens; Stock, 1998; published in English as Strange Ways, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 2000; Phoenix, 2002), Les Indiens (Stock, 2001), La fin des paysages (Stock, 2006), and Cruels, 13 (Prix Ozoir’elles; Stock, 2008). He has also written a work of autobiographical literary nonfiction, 11 septembre mon amour (Stock, 2003), and writes on contemporary art and on the art of the novel. He teaches aesthetics at L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Paris et Cergy.
