Gabriel Chevallier : Gabriel Chevallier (1895–1969) was called to duty at the start of World War I and though wounded a year later, returned to the front, where he served as an infantryman until the war’s end. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre and Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. In 1930, he gave La Peur to Stock; in 1933, he produced the novel Clarisse Vernon. In 1934, he became famous because of Clochemerle, published in English by Vintage Classics and translated into 30 languages. The book sold several million copies and was dramatized first in a 1947 film by Pierre Chenal and in then 1972 by the BBC.
