Description

“An immediate favorite, all poetry and tenderness, like the story Amélie.” Télérama

A bookstore that is always open and whose owner never leaves is the premise of this modern parable about the things people look for in books, if not in life.

Reminiscent of The Little Prince or the bibliophile’s Gift From the Sea, the bookseller one meets in Régis de Sá Moreira’s delightful latest novel only sells books he has read, so he opens his store with a collection that barely fills a shelf. But as he ages, the shelves multiply, as do the topics of the volumes that fill them. The people who enter the store vary as widely as the books on offer and appear in turn real, ethereal, ghostly, or as pure figments of his imagination. No matter their manners or appearance, the bookseller takes their quest very seriously (though at least once he hides under his desk at the approach of an unpleasant customer). Sometimes it is not what they ask for that they get, and sometimes get nothing from him, having asked for too much.
