Mort aux cons is the story of a man who has had enough of the jerks who plague his life and decides one day to do something about it. Convinced that these annoying members of society cannot be reformed, he sees no other alternative than to bump them off. The neighbor’s cat is the first to go; he throws it out of the window in a fit of frustration. The next day he feels immense satisfaction and sees no reason to stop at the cat. After having gotten rid of all the other annoying pets of the neighborhood, he sets out to seek revenge on his nosy caretaker, an aggressive driver, and his mean boss, to name but a few. A particularly talented serial killer, he manages to make each murder look like an accident. He wants us to understand the motives of his crimes, while developing a theory about what it is to be a jerk. The main targets of his attack are not only the people who bug him but also those he believes to be representations of stupidity in society, such as animal-rights protesters, political reformers, and any so-called experts. As his murder count rises steadily, his actions begin to raise suspicions with the police. He strikes an unlikely friendship with the detective in charge of the investigation, with whom he has long philosophical discussions about his “jerk theory.” These conversations will inspire him to pursue new targets, but how many more murders can he get away with?
