Description
Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Parallel Biographies depicts the lives of two men whose paths crossed and who thus gave birth to some of the most influential philosophical works of the twentieth century. This encounter took place in 1969, in the aftermath of May 1968 and the trail of vibrant intellectual movements and political activities they left in their wake. Gilles Deleuze was teaching philosophy at an experimental school at the University of Paris VIII, having already achieved notoriety in academic circles through his innovative approach to the history of philosophy. Félix Guattari was a psychotherapist at La Borde Clinic, where he tried to create an institution in which both patients and staff members would work equally together to run the facility. A trained psychoanalyst strongly influenced by Lacan, he created CERFI (the Center for the Study and Research of Institutional Formation) and was a lifelong left-wing activist. The collaboration that started in 1969 was to prove fruitful, combining their different experiences to produce exceptional works and a myriad of new philosophical concepts. This high creativity and intense intellectual work led to their founding of the field of schizoanalysis, an attempt to criticize the rigid framework of psychoanalysis and the contradictions of capitalism. This biography provides an insight into the French cultural history of the post–World War II period, all the while clearly presenting the work, ideas, and essential concepts of these two great thinkers.
