Description
Yamine is an anarchist agitator in a Maghrebi city overrun by soldiers and imams. Roaming the streets of the misery-ridden town, this modern-day Don Quixote spends his days vituperating and haranguing the miscellaneous crowds of outcasts, beggars, cripples, souk merchants, and fortune-tellers who dwell there. He eventually manages to put together a patchy army of indigents, who despite their wretchedness find the will to revolt and fight for their freedom. Through this poetic story, Bekhechi depicts the situation of many North African countries, oppressed by military regimes, stricken by poverty, and tempted by the promises of religious fanaticism.
