This is the true life story of Khadija, a young woman shaped by brutal political events that have gone largely unreported outside of her native Yemen. From a poverty-stricken childhood in San'â during the 1960’s, grants received for study abroad, and a career working for Yemeni television, she brings a vision of Yemen unlike one we’ve ever had. She relates her comical experiences traveling in remote mountain villages, as well as more somber moments like witnessing blood feuds in outlying Bedouin territories. Khadija reflects on such topics as Yemen’s role in the Iraq conflict, southern Yemen’s Marxist government, the revolution of 1960, and former president Ali Nasir Muhammad. This beautiful and richly told anecdotal history of Yemen, its people and its politics is set against the colorful backdrop of the legend and poetry of the land of the Queen of Sheba.
