Description
Freed from tyranny, Iraq has sunk into violence; from a totalitarian regime, it has yielded to chaos. The country is now engulfed in anarchy, terrorism, barbaric murders, kidnappings, and attacks on mosques and churches. Its hope for freedom has been defeated. Like all the Iraqi people, Christians are living through their own hell; accused by extremists of collaborating with the American invader, thousands faced with exile or death (they were one million in 1980, and only 650 000 today). The others are hiding. After having been manipulated by the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, they are now oppressed by violence and can’t recognize themselves in their own country anymore. Archbishop of Baghdad, Jean Benjamin Sleiman attests to their doubts and suffering. He condemns the dhimmitude, the notion of submissiveness that Islamic Law mandates for non-Muslims, and gives a profound analysis of the religious, historical, social and political consequences of Iraq’s 2,000 year old Christianity. This uncompromising account vividly evokes the situation in Iraq, warning that the country could easily shift toward an Islamic republic, and that a solution needs to be found, where all the communities are represented.
