Description
In the style of Carson McCullers to whom the author has been compared, Ce que racontait Jones is an Australian Brothers Karamazov, set at the turn of the Twentieth Century in the out-back. Narrated by Jones, a former fortune-teller turned raconteur, it is the story of the Nagalingam family, once a towering circus dynasty, and where they are today. Magnolita Rosaria was once an adulated trapeze artist, while Tarcisius was a renowned tiger trainer. Now Tarcisius languishes on the front porch, aged, moaning and incessantly complaining. Their three sons are characters of legendary proportions. Abraham, Sutter, and Todd are lost souls reluctantly setting out into the world each in his own profoundly self-defeating manner, driven by nothing other than the desire to win their mother’s love. Meanwhile, Magnolita could not be bothered with them, and is just waiting for her husband to die so that she can set out to begin a new life of fame and fortune. When one son brings her his motherless daughter to care for, the little girl is locked into a closet, only to emerge years later as half-monster, half-angel, and witness to a crime.
