Description
François Ordet’s vibrant, critically acclaimed first novel delves into the alternatively mysterious, magnificent, and Kafkaesque world of post-perestroika early 1990’s Russia. François, the protagonist, is shaken out of his mundane Parisian existence when he meets an eccentric Ukrainian filmmaker who wants him to make an historical film about Russia. He accepts and is immediately thrust into a dreamlike world in which past sufferings and present reforms are constantly interacting. The effect is hallucinatory and engrossing; we encounter characters like Louzine, the charismatic voice of Radio Moscou, and Babek, the ex-Soviet general who has transformed himself from a military leader into a semi-legitimate capitalist mogul slash mob boss; we tour the streets, back-alleys and slums of Moscow, as well as a secret Siberian village run by Babek to mine uranium. François becomes both the director and principal actor in his own film, and must decide which vision of Russia is to be saved for posterity. Moscou! Moscou! is one of the most bold, experimental, and original novels to come out of this year’s rentrée.
