Description
Samira Bellil’s only mistake was falling in love. At fourteen she fell for one of the toughest guys in her housing project on the outskirts of Paris. After losing her virginity to him on a rancid basement couch, her disappointment soon turned to horror. Rather than give her status and protection as the girlfriend of a leader, he handed her over to his friends. Soon she was introduced to the nightmare of repeated gang rape. Dans l’enfer des tournantes is Samira’s courageous stand against what is a rampant problem in the predominantly Muslim slums and projects around France’s cities. A young girl can become a victim simply for not wearing the head-scarf, or for following French and western dress codes rather than Muslim ones. To make matters worse, the local authorities do not interfere with this criminal behavior, nor do the families of the victims. Rarely, in fact, do the victims speak out, for fear of violent reprisal. After fifteen years and much therapy, Samira is finally able to tell a story common to thousands of young Muslim women in France today. This memoir of a twenty-nine year old is wise beyond its years, and will inspire young people everywhere who are haunted by peer pressure and bullying to speak up.
