Description
Berlioz used to compare his life to a novel, and indeed, the life of this self-taught musician who would become one of the greatest composers of his time reads like fiction. A quintessential Romantic, he led an exciting and exhausting life filled with numerous passionate love affairs, travels across Europe and friendships with such luminary figures as Liszt, Chopin, George Sand, and Alexandre Dumas. Rémy, in an attempt to unveil the internal contradictions of this tortured artiste on a path for glory, skillfully chronicles both the success and excess of the musician’s brilliant yet often misunderstood career. In this most complete biography published on the eve of the bicentennial of Berlioz’s birth, Pierre-Jean Rémy celebrates with critical erudition and lyrical prose the epic life of the famous virtuoso who was loved yet tormented, and whose genius justifies the myth he embodies today.
