Description
“Life is desire,” announces one of the protagonists of Katherine Pancol’s best-selling new novel Embrassez-moi, which explores the lives and desires of Angela, a French woman who finds herself on New York’s Upper East Side, and Louise, a former American silent movie star. The women tell the story of their lives through their respective loves in a series of poignant conversations, and it is in this joint act of remembrance that the unlikely friends find the meaning of it all. While living comfortably with the caring, dependable Virgile, it is Angela’s chance encounter with a passionate ex-lover that sends her spinning into a tailspin of doubt. Aided by the steadying presence of her bed-ridden confidante, she looks back on her past loves and losses, trying to find answers to the present. Meanwhile, Louise, initially reticent, opens herself up as well, delighting her listener with charming recollections of her days in Hollywood, her encounters with Cary Grant, and her brief love affair with Charlie Chaplin. Angela and Louise’s sumptuously recounted memories span decades and continents, from Paris to Prague, from Hollywood to New York City.
