Description
Arabs from Israel, most of them descendents of the one hundred sixty thousand Palestinians who remained within the Israeli State after its creation in 1948, number today more than one million. Statistics show that by 2050, their number will reach 3.7 million. But, if the majority of Arab citizens of Israel claim Palestinian identity, their cultural and religious diversity is often a source of difference when it comes to community organization and collective identity. Laurence Louer draws our attention to an aspect of Arabs of Israel not commonly known. A student of Gilles Kepel, Laurence Louer first presented Les Citoyens d’Israel to him as a thesis. Kepel convinced her to expand it into a book and accepted to write the foreword. Les Citoyens d’Israel is a fascinating chronological look at the history of Arabs in Israel since its creation. It also presents the many facets of their political role and influence in Israel today and brings to light the need for the Israeli State to accept its multicultural population. With testimonies of various people of the community, Les Citoyens d’Israel is also an enlightening sociological study.
