Description
Long before Himmler, Germany was a major colonial power in Africa. From 1880 to 1918 it dominated most of South West Africa in countries such as Cameroon, Togo, today’s Namibia, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanganyika. In this unique study, Bernard Lugan recounts German explorations in Africa, the establishment of its Empire there and its colonial policies dictated from Berlin. He also reveals Germany’s part in Africa during WWI. At the beginning of the war, a small German contingent tried to avoid the inevitable invasion of their colonies in Africa by French, British, Belgian, and Portuguese troupes: among them, General von Lettow-Vorbeck whose actions constitute an amazing war account. Present in almost every country where Germany was at war, General von Lettow-Vorbeck was 44 when he arrived in Dar es-Salaam. In 1914, he was in charge of securing land and sea borders in Africa with very few means. For four years he resisted the Allies right up to the signature of the Armistice. Cette Afrique qui était Allemande is an exceptional study of great documentary value on a little-known part of African and German history, enriched by a photo insert and an excellent cartography.
