Description
From the twelve centuries before Christ to the seventh century of our era, Numidians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines in turn flowed into Northern Africa from the coast of Morocco to the Libyan Desert. Over time, they became the North African we know today, products of an ancient melting pot with a common heritage as distinct from the rest of the continent as North America is from its South. The mixture of influences gave birth to a brilliant and original synthesis of Antique civilizations. The prestigious names of Carthage, Cyrenaica, Leptis Magna, Tipasa, Timgad, Volubilis and more, are here to remind us of the artistic and historical wealth of their past. With this fascinating and beautifully realized work, André Laronde, a distinguished historian, and Jean-Claude Golvin, an archeologist and illustrator, help us rediscover the North Africa that emerged during Antiquity. Through texts, restituted drawings and photos, we learn about cities acting as major Mediterranean ports, rich villages and military camps in hostile lands, as well as art works honoring the men and women who made the history of North Africa.
