Description
The story of architecture in France during the last century might well have begun in 1940. With its cities and towns still smoking from war-time bombs, the French government in exile in Vichy put in place a plan to rebuild from the ruins, using architecture as a form of urban renewal. The same group of planners found themselves in office back in Paris after the war, and they continued to spread their vision of rebuilding as improving, and with this view, set the stage for France's post-war urban landscape. Le Corbusier's arrival was the defining event in post-war French architecture, and he almost single-handedly spelled the end of the Beaux-Arts' decades-long influence. New theories and doctrines replaced conventions. Palaces of glass rose out of the old stone edifices of the French past, in a break with tradition and an embrace of structure and technology that that is characteristic of French design and innovation to this day. With elegant line-drawings, helpful side-bars, and essential buildings depicted in matted duo-tone, this is an invaluable history, encyclopedia, and general reference all in one.
