Description
In Ocre Fatale, Assem Akram takes us back to the time when the Soviet government invaded Afghanistan, engaging itself in a campaign that has been widely dubbed “the Soviet Vietnam.” Through the eyes of a young Afghani farmer, Timour, we relive the pain and shock the people of Afghanistan experienced as they suffered the destruction of their villages, the killing of their wives and children and their loss of autonomy. In the country’s rugged but beautiful mountain terrain, great battles are fought against a Russian invader equipped with far more weapons than the resistance army.
The story opens as Timour is about to first approach the woman of his dreams. But before he reaches her house, his village is invaded by Russian troupes and both his loved one and his family are killed. Driven by revenge and without a home, he travels the country and explains to those he encounters what happened to his people and convinces them to organize. Timour joins the resistance army lead by a former Russian general, himself appalled by atrocities perpetuated by his fellow citizens. In the saga that unfolds, Assem Akram shows the courage, customs and love of freedom of the Afghani people, as well as their ambiguous relationship with their neighbor, Pakistan.
