Description
Isabelle Dalloye first wrote Femmes d' Afghanistan in 1980 after teaching for four years in an Afghani high school. When the Talibans destroyed Bamyan's giant Buddhist statues in complete international indifference, she decided to update her book, unaware that a few years later, Afghanistan would figure so tragically in the media. First published in France by a feminist press, this edition of Femmes d'Afghanistan republished here by Phébus is as topical as ever. Despite her great love for the country, its landscape, culture and people, Isabelle observes Afghanistan's contradictions: its poverty often sustained by superstition; its social structures mostly shaped by women; the repression of these same strong women. One by one, Isabelle lets the women she meets tell of their experience as mothers, wives, and workers. She lets them speak in their own words, and their expressions of joy and pain are often eerily and unwittingly poetic.
