Description
The era of the religious wars represents one of the darkest periods in France’s history, and of its people. In Les Français pendant les guerres de religion, Jean-Marie Constant sheds new light on the significance of this terrible time. Unlike previous studies on the subject, Constant does not focus on individual battles or political confrontations, but rather on the important role ordinary men and women, such as soldiers, noblemen, and peasants played in putting an end to those tragic times. Constant also argues that religious wars laid some of the ideological foundations of modern France, and that the Edict of Nantes was a first step towards a human rights movement.
