Description
In this poignant first-person narrative, Lucienne Sinzelle recounts the childhood years she spent at Malagar, the name given to the estate near Bordeaux where the famous French writer François Mauriac spent his summers. It is the same Malagar that was the backdrop for many of Mauriac’s novels. Sinzelle’s family lived on the property year-round in a one-room shack with no electricity, in constant preparation for the arrival of the Mauriac family. The book was compiled from the recent letters Sinzelle wrote to Mauriac’s son, Jean. She writes with simplicity (at times, with seeming indifference) about the hardship she endured during her years at Malagar. She also writes with passion about her fond memories there. It is a story that has garnered a great deal of attention in France because of its implications about the revered writer François Mauriac. But even more, Mon Malagar is a revealing first-person account of the shocking conditions faced by a young peasant girl and her family in the years before the Second World War.
