It evokes a world reminiscent of I.B. Singer, Sholom Aleichem, and Marc Chagall, yet entirely original. The stories—comical, touching, unpredictable, marvelously imaginative and curiously universal—involve people living in the Marais district of Paris in the 1950s. They seem but one step removed from the eastern European shtetl which in some sense they have brought with them or perpetuated in the Marais, which was then the Jewish quarter of the capital. French nationals, they speak French, although the language that gives them comfort and identity is Yiddish. Odd though it may seem, many of them are extraordinary by virtue of an obsession: from an old man’s passion for pickelfleisch (corned beef), to a young Hebrew teacher’s passion for the jazz trumpet.
