Description
Despite the many divisions of the Church throughout history, the "Our Father," one of Christianity’s founding texts, has remained omnipresent and unalienable, and has had an extraordinary fate as a profoundly mystical document. Although several studies of the Our Father have already been published, this is the first to take into consideration the new discoveries which have broadened research in the last fifty years: the Dead Sea Scrolls; the Essenes library in Palestine; Hebrew, Greek and Aramean texts found in the Desert of Judea; additional manuscripts in the caves of Qumrân; the re-appearance of texts at the crossroads between the Old and the New Testaments; as well as great improvement in translation from Aramean. In Le Notre Père, Marc Philonenko analyzes previous studies of the Our Father and sheds new light on the prayer, placing it in the literary context of the Gospel to bring out its linguistic and sociological value. Presupposing that the first half of the prayer is Jesus’ prayer to God and that the second half is Jesus’ prayers to his disciples, Philonenko defends the messianic, communal and eschatological value of the Our Father and shows how these elements form the core of the prayer. Both history of religion and exegesis, Le Notre Père is a major work in the study of religion.
