Description
Young sister of Marguerite de Cortone, Claire de Montefalco and Angèle de Foligno, Claire de Rimini belongs to the tenure of women saints who, in 13th- and 14th-century Italy tried to live an original spiritual experience which was strongly influenced by Franciscan spirituality. Basing his biography on a medieval manuscript, Jean Dalarun relates the extraordinary legend of Claire de Rimini with substance and grace. The reader follows de Rimini though the long stages which liberated her from the yoke of men at a time when women weren’t allowed to be heard by the Church, and along her excesses when she inflicts cruel public penitence upon herself as a visitation of the Passion. Ascetic, mystical, and rebellious, Claire de Rimini was considered to be on the borderline between saintliness and heresy during the Inquisition. More than an account of her individual experience, this poetic story examines the place of women in medieval society, political change in Italian cities, the emergence of national languages in Religion and the didactic role of images.
