Description
Despite the many wounds inflicted by history, Hanoi still possesses a rich heritage that makes it unique in South East Asia. Occupied for nearly a millennium by the Chinese, Hanoi became the capital of an independent state in 1010, first Buddhist, then Confucian. A major religious center, its cultural influence was widespread as shown by the Temple of Literature dedicated to Confucius, the first national university. The city was at its prime in the 15th century, attracting merchants and missionaries from around the world. In 1882, Hanoi fell into the hands of the French who turned it into the capital of Indochina (1902-1953). This volume retraces the past of this «Museum city,» a crossroads for many Asian cultures.
