Description
After an extended period of conformity in the 1980s came a sudden increase in social justice movements and schools of thought. Such movements—from Latin American peasant uprisings and the Zapatista guerillas to Act Up and European movements for illegal immigrants—were criticized in turn. This new anti-establishment subjectivity is considered by many to be inefficient, incapable of attaining a more political level or suggesting reforms that could effectively change society. In this incisive essay, the authors contest this judgment. They show that, in fact, movements generated by such anti-establishment positions often do develop new forms of resistance and struggle whose capacities for emancipation are frowned upon because they do not correspond to traditional forms of political action. This optimistic text will appeal to those interested in reinventing justice and freedom.
