Description
A peasant family in Burgundy loses its land to an oil magnate. Jefkins, the nephew, has a taste for adventure and leaves for the city. He manages to find a job in a second-rate factory where he discovers the harsh conditions the workers must endure. When he leaves for a coveted position in what is considered to be an exemplary factory, he is again dissatisfied by the extreme inhumanity of industry. Weary of his subservient existence, he frees himself from his job and begins to publish pamphlets which, surprisingly, earn him a reasonable income. His success allows him to settle his family in a farm once again, and to taste the pleasures of life as he once knew it. Les Yeux en face des trous is one of Henri Vincenot’s finest novels, expressing his love for freedom and his conflict with the establishment which uses «progress» as an excuse to mistreat humanity. Written in 1959, Les Yeux en face des trous is pitilessly lucid, mordant, and tinged with humor.
