Atiq Rahimi
Atiq Rahimi was born in Kabul in 1962 and educated at the Franco-Afghan school there. For a brief period, he joined his father in exile in India. Then shortly after the Soviet invasion of 1979, he returned to Kabul, where he studied literature and became a film critic. At age 22, he fled to Pakistan, seeking asylum at the French embassy. A resident of France since 1985, he completed his studies in Rouen and then at the Sorbonne. He is the author of two novels: Terre et cendre/Earth and Ashes (published in the United States by Harcourt, 2002 and in the United Kingdom by Chatto & Windus, 2002), a best seller in France and Germany that was adapted into a film directed by the author, and A Thousand Rooms of Dreams and Fear (Chatto & Windus, 2006).
