Maurice Dekobra was one of Europe’s most popular novelists during the interwar period. He has taught at the University of Berlin, shot big game in Africa, canoed on the Nile, and translated Defoe, Jack London, and O. Henry (among others) into his native French. During World War I, he was liaison officer with the British, Indian, and U.S. armies and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. His books have been translated into 23 languages, and many were turned into movies (La Madone des sleepings, Macao l’enfer du jeu, Le Sphinx a parlé).
