Josef van Ess is professor emeritus at the University of Tubingen where he has been Chairman of Islamic Studies and Semitic Languages for over thirty years. He is the author of Theologie und Gesellschaft im 2. und 3. Jahrhundert Hidschia (Berlin, 1991-1997), an extensive six-volume study of Muslim theology. This monumental 4,000 page history is considered mandatory reading for scholars and students alike.
