French Voices 2009

We are delighted to announce that the following books have been chosen by the 2009 French Voices committee to receive a $6,000 translation grant, to be paid to the American publisher for its translation and publication.

Two have already found a US publisher : the anthology A Life on Paper by Georges-Olivier Châteaureynand will be published by Small Beer Press and The invention of Heterosexual Culture by Louis-Georges Tin by MIT press.

But the 2008 Prix Medicis winner, Là où les tigres sont chez eux (Where Tigers Feel at Home) by Jean-Marie Blas de Roblès and On n’y voit rien! (I Can’t See a Thing!), a collection of knowledgeable and thought-provoking essays on art history by Daniel Arasse are still on submission.

World English rights to Serge Gainsbourg by Gilles Verlant were purchased by Tam Tam Books. This will be the first biography of the singer, songwriter, novelist, and major pop cultural figure to be released in English, and part of the publisher’s plans to make this 20th century icon known to the Anglophone world. Published in France by Éditions Albin Michel.

We are pleased to announce the purchase of World English rights to four early 20th century classics by Irène Némirovsky by Vintage Books in the U.S. and Chatto & Windus in the U.K. David Golder, Le bal, Les mouches d'automne and L'affaire Courilof were originally published in Paris by Éditions Grasset & Fasquelle.

World English rights to Le Vieux Jardin, by pre-eminent Korean novelist Hwang Sok-yong, were purchased by Seven Stories Press, who have recently released The Guest, his first novel to be translated into English. The author, who will appear in New York at the April 2006 PEN World Voices Festival. is published in France by Éditions Zulma.
